NZ Car Insurance Calculator

Estimate your car insurance premium by vehicle value, cover type, driver age, location, excess, and no-claims bonus. Car insurance is NOT compulsory in New Zealand, but ACC (which covers personal injury from accidents) does NOT cover vehicle or property damage. If you cause an accident and are uninsured, you are personally liable for all damage to the other party.

Rates reflect 2026 market pricing from AA Insurance, Tower, AMI, State, Vero, Protecta, Star Insure, and Cove. Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) reports approximately 4.5 million registered vehicles in NZ, with 293 road deaths and approximately 2,200 serious injuries in 2024.

Car Insurance in New Zealand

Car insurance is not legally required in NZ, but it is strongly recommended. ACC covers personal injury from motor vehicle accidents (funded by levies on fuel and vehicle registration), but ACC does NOT cover vehicle damage, property damage you cause to others, or your own vehicle damage. If you cause an accident and are uninsured, you are personally liable for all damage, which can easily reach $20,000-$100,000+ for vehicle and property damage.
